Unexpectedly, 115 pupils from Bishop Henry Gogarty in Arusha, on a day trip to Pangani, arrived to look at the dig.
With Severine Kizato from Uzikwasa, Paul, Stephanie and Patricia met the Director of Secondary Education, Mwechaga Ali, for introductions to the local schools.
Typical of most schools, Pangani Primary has classes of between 60-80 children who are taught in Swahili.
Teachers make their own display materials, even from old sacks.
Monica. a Swahili speaker, talked to a couple of classes about archaeology and invited them to look at the dig.
Funguni Secondary school's motto is Forward Ever, Backward Never. As in all secondary schools, classes are conducted in English.
The teachers were keen to advise on materials they would like and were keen to discuss all manner of things.
Several private primary schools teach in English. Valerie, founded Choba Primary fifteen years ago...
...the headmaster, Temo, was a student in her first class.
They were keen to visit the dig so Severine showed them some of the finds.
While teachers at Al Hijra Secondary are quite progressive...
...students are strictly segregated.
They enjoyed helping archaeologists with their surveying.
