Before the trip, more material was prepared for the schools and for guides to Vela Spila: the route, past Vela Spila animals would take in the ice age;...
... animals hunted; figurines made 17,000 years ago; diagrams to show sea level changes; scenes of life in the new stone age.
A day-to-day diary for recording all visitors, a show-and-tell book & laser pointer for the guides were brought for the cave.
We arrived on 19th March, in time for the St. Joseph's Day traditional dances.
The Mayor and most of the town were there, either watching or participating.
The dances and dancers were extraordinarily energetic.
The sword fights drews blood !
At the grand finale, the piper is raised on the swords.
Other traditional dances are enjoyed; each tells a story.
This exhibition of excellent children's art, led me to ask the teacher for artwork on the Vela Spila theme.
Dinner at Alfa - renewing friendships.
The Municipality widely promoted our 3rd meeting to facilitate people wanting to create work-shops to attract off-season visitors.
One of the workshops takes place in these idyllic surroundings.
Masses of wild, sweet-smelling flowers can be enjoyed in the Spring, including irises, hiacynths & fresias.
Some of the thousands of kilometers of dry-stone walls. Why were they made so thick, and so close together ?
We gathered tools & record books for the 2nd Young Archaeoligists' Week-end Workshop.
This game helps remind them of the English names for the tools and equipment.
This game helps them learn how to plot their test-pits (or to plot anything). The fun begins when they swap directions and the box has to be replaced in correct spot!
The 2m tall clear plexi-glass tube arrived. This will be displayed in the cave and filled with layers of sediment and artifacts so people will understand a little better how archaeologists work.
The group were shown some of the nany finds from Vela Spila: shells, bones, stone tools and what they tell us.
Our thanks again to the fire service for taking us up to the cave.
